What’s in a Name?

Ah, Shakespeare! Are there any four words penned by you that are more compelling or recognizable? “What’s in a name?…” If we can’t name that tune in the first four notes, then certainly the subsequent “that which we call a rose, would smell as sweet” rings familiar to an audience much greater than can be imagined.

Compelling, recognizable, memorable. This is exactly the point of my post. When you pick a name for a domain, you want it all.

I’ve been using HartInspirations.com for about 3 years now. Just as fair Juliet’s words might imply, by now I have a sentimental attachment to the name. It also says what I am trying to accomplish with my writing, inspire readers about life with my words.

However, it’s long to type (yes, I know people bookmark, but…), and prone to errors if you try. SusanLHart.com, which I have just started transitioning to in the past week on this site, is shorter, simpler, and it brands my name. Here I am, this is me, this is what I believe in. But it just doesn’t have the same hook as the other name, and I’m frankly feeling pangs of loss. Why? Likely because for me the writing is more about higher purpose than self.

I’m conflicted, so today I’m putting it out there for public opinion. You may well think as my partner does, “It really doesn’t matter Susan, just keep writing…” (But as pragmatic and direct as this man is, he has always liked HartInspirations.com.) So this may bring me getting closer the real crux of it. The also well-known phrase “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” comes to mind.

ILiveToWritePlays.com or Shakespeare.com? Hmm… What would William have chosen?

HartInspirations.com or SusanLHart.com? Please leave a comment if you’d like to.

And thank you, as always, for reading. 🙂

Susan, I love HartInspirations so much! If ever there was a perfect title, this is it.. You were gifted with the perfect last name, and your writings do come from your heart. Whether it is your writings, your beautiful artwork, or the combination: it is perfection.

Oh, Rita. thank you for your answer. I don’t know if you saw VJ’s reply. “HartInspirations is how I think of you, SusanLHart is your name” Your replies are similar. I’m having trouble letting go, I suppose because HartInspirations speaks to purpose.

HartInspirations is my choice as well because it states what you’re all about. The other choice is your name which doesn’t tell us anything, except of course that it’s a very pretty one.

Dear J, HartInspirations appears to be the readers choice today. I appreciate your comment, so thank you. As for my name being pretty, I think perhaps too much so. So that makes a good case again for HartInspirations for the name of the site. It allows for the reader to give me a chance without dismissing me without reading first because of my name.

I think Hart Inspirations speaks more to what you are trying to accomplish here. Whereas your name leaves things a bit more ambiguous if people don’t know you. This may cause them to dig deeper, but in most cases, probably not. A long winded way of saying, I like Inspirations better!
If you are concerned about your readers looking for you online and not finding a site, simply buy the name branded domain, link it to this site, but keep inspirations as your primary one. That’s my two cents. Though it’s completely up to you. And I’ll be here either way.

Thanks, Alegria. My takeaway from both my gut feeling and the input yesterday (plus yours today) is to do exactly that. Today you’ll see my primary domain is back to hartinspirations.com. I already own susanlhart.com, and it points to the site as a secondary way for people to find me. 🙂
